Each year, the Office of Community Engaged Learning celebrates a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in engaging Lewis students in community-based learning. This year, we honored Dr. Jennifer Buss, Associate Professor of Special Education, with the De La Salle Medallion for Excellence in Community Engaged Learning.
Dr. Buss has inspired her students, motivating them toward creating inclusive learning communities, as well as contributing to numerous community organizations and schools by growing their capacity to respond to the needs of their learners. She has been invested in building dynamic relationships with community agencies and schools, such as the Secondary Transition Experience Program (STEP), Lincoln-Way High School, Fairmont School, and the Disability Resource Center of Joliet. Through building these relationships and integrating engagement into her classes, Dr. Buss has demonstrated a deep commitment to teaching and learning, along with a passion for justice.
Dr. Buss has been a significant supporter of CEL pedagogy over the years. She has designated three of her own education courses and she regularly engages students with schools or other community partners in those courses that haven’t been designated. Additionally, she has served on the Community Engaged Learning (Advisory) Team since its inception over ten years ago, supporting the work of colleagues across campus.
OCEL is thrilled to honor the great work of Dr. Jennifer Buss with this De La Salle Medallion!
